Metal mechanical models

About sixty metal models of machine mechanisms have been preserved at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. More than twenty of them were imported from Germany in the 1890's when these were extremely expensive, which illustrates the Japanese governments enthusiasm for modernization of machine industry.
Most are still operational today. For example, one model has a mechanism that transforms a uniform rotational motion to an irregular one. Another model has two rotational axes of different directions that are connected skillfully. The models are very useful for education.
Today, it's not so difficult to realize complex mechanical movements if electronic technology is applied while not observing the process. Therefore, it is very beneficial for students to observe and operate the models by themselves and understand various mechanical mechanisms involved.

10 out of those are exhibited in the museum, and several of them will be replaced appropriately. The four replicas are placed for visitors to turn the handle by themselves and ascertain the movement.
