Abstract:It is supposed that the scientific or industrial technologies of present-day Japan are founded on what was imported or produced during the second half of the 1950s after Admiral Perry arrived to Japan in 1853. However, because there is almost no recognition that the technological tools of this important time for Japan are indeed cultural heritage of Japan, they are discarded in many cases without securing the places of preservation for them. In spite of such a situation, some items escaped abandonment and the preservation places for them were obtained somewhere else, by efforts of the people concerned. We report, as an example, the machine tools that were left at Kyoto University.
