A mechanism analysis of KARAKURI dolls of Edo era by comparison with Reuleaux models
Abstract:Reuleaux's name remains in kinematics and the mechanism models made by his idea cover the basic machine mechanisms used by the modern machine industry. The mechanisms of KARAKURI dolls of Edo era that were made before Japan imported modern machine industry include the fundamental mechanisms which are common in Reuleaux models. I reported a comparative study on some of Reuleaux models and the internal mechanisms of KARAKURI doll, with a tea serving doll as an example, at the previous conference. However, the diagrams of the KARAKURI-ZUI, a famous machine book of the Edo era, which was used for explanation of previous conference, are too partial, and it is not so easy to understand those diagrams. Therefore, at this presentation, the mechanism diagrams show more clearly every operation. In addition, another mechanism which was not explained previously will be presented with the clear diagram. Furthermore, the mechanism of the DANGAERI doll will be explained. A comparative examination between Reuleaux models and KARAKURI mechanisms will also be given.
