Abstract: An elaborate wooden model of a steam locomotive in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of Kyoto University is said to have been preserved since the department was founded 100 years ago. It is thought that when the model was made, Japan did not have the engineering level necessary to make a true steam locomotive. In this investigation, the original locomotive type of this model, the background behind its production, and its relation to education in this early stage of the Japanese railway were considered.
